Land Cover of Illinois
Satellite
imagery from
1991-1995 was used to delineate the principal land cover patterns prevalent within
Illinois. This landcover data, along with digital data of county and township
boundaries, roadways and stream corridors, was used to identify key Illinois habitats
for long term, systematic monitoring of changes in ecological and environmental
conditions by CTAP Professional Scientists Monitoring Program. The key Illinois
habitats are randomly chosen locations across the state, the basic unit of sample
being the township, of which there are 1,700 available.
Based on ESRI's ArcGIS/ArcIMS technology and CTAP database data, maps and
reports are created for scientists, local groups, lawmakers, state and federal agencies, and
citizens to visually utilize the CTAP data to understand the conditions of Illinois forests, wetlands,
grasslands, and streams.
